Star closer Edwin Diaz and the New York Mets are in agreement on a five-year, $102 million contract, pending a physical, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Sunday.
There's an opt-out and a full no-trade clause, plus a sixth-year option, in the contract, sources said.
The Diaz deal is the first nine-figure contract ever for a closer and for the first time takes the position into the $20 million-plus range.
Diaz, who made $10 million this year, earned the big payday after a dominant 2022 season that saw him finish with 32 saves, a 1.31 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 62.0 innings for a Mets team that won 101 games.
New York's bullpen finished 10th in the majors in ERA, and the top relievers in innings pitched (Adam Ottavino, Seth Lugo, Trevor Williams and Diaz) were among the 131 players across the major leagues who were declared free agents Sunday, the day after the 2022 season ended.
Keeping Diaz is a massive move for the Mets to start the offseason, as one of baseball's top free agents is now off the board.

Absolutely stupid. Relievers can turn into gas cans quick. 32 saves and what 4-5 blown saves? High K guy for sure but end of the day it’s a save. Those 32 saves helped them finish tied with Atlanta and first round early exit. Got schmucks like Bard and Barlow in KC and Col with probably just as many saves if not more. Yet didn’t have probably near as many opportunities for a save on those garbage teams.

Wasn’t Eric Gagne saving like 60 games a year back in the day? Wonder what he would be worth. Trade for A guy like Bard for pennies or put money into something else. Seems insane 20+ million for a closer 32 saves on 110 win team. He had that wild almost 60 saves season 6-7 years ago. Been but average 30 saves guy with Mets for what 5 years now.

Why because it’s valid? How is that buggin?

Mets haven’t done anything in how many years? Keith Hernandez and Darling are turning into Bob Uecker. Just miserable after witnessing failure after failure.

Giants the only savior in professional sports out of NY to do anything past 25 years. Yanks can at least hold their head up over this 20 year drought. Mets Rangers Jets Knicks Nets have been trash for eternity. But al least they have a 20 million dollar closer for trumpet entertainment. Maybe a red cape and let a bull run around next year during this side skit.
